T-Fal OW5005001 Review by galad

This is my first bread machine. I have made baguettes "by hand" a few times in the past with great success. I was very happy with some French Artisian bread I made as well as the corn bread that I made. The first time I made the baguettes, I made a few kneading mistakes, but they were nice and crunchy on the outside (the part I like). The second time, good results, they just seem a bit more "bready" in the center than the longer ones.

The machine works very well and is easy to use. I have a scratch on the inside after only 4 uses (scratch on the non-stick). It could have been there when I opened it, but it's a little disappointing at this point as I'm a very careful person, and it's a young machine.

T-Fal OW5005001 Review by Wilhouse (Houston, Texas)

I purchased this breadmaker in November as a holiday gift for my wife, and we have used it for the past two months. We've made basic white bread, raisin bread and walnut/cranberry wheat bread.

Every loaf of bread tastes great. The first time we used it, we somehow pressed the timer button and then had to scour the instructions on how to reset the timer (hold it down for 5 seconds), but that was the last glitch we've had (operator error...). Frankly, it's about as easy as it can get: add the ingrediants directly to the bread pan in order (some recipes suggest you pre-mix the flours since when you are making say wheat bread, you use both wheat and white flour), and some recipes have you add extra ingrediants at a later time (the raisins for the raisin bread). You press a button to set the size of the loaf (2lb, 2.5lb and 3lb)the color of the crust (light, medium, dark - always start with light, as so far that's been plenty dark for us) and the progam number (the book tells you which one). Press start and around 3 hours later you have bread.

With the cranberry walnut bread (the recipe called for pecans but we like walnuts in our bread) you add the cranberries and nuts in the beginning. We did not crush the nuts at all, just added in walnuts pieces, and the breadmaker "crushed" them during the mixing process. The cranberries were likewise reduced in size. When we added the raisins later in the process, the raisins were still pretty much whole.

The only con, which to us is minor, is that there's no backlight on the digital display, so you have to turn on the light in the room to see the settings if it's dark. If there's decent light in the room you can see it fine. I wouldn't say that's a reason not to buy it, an maybe it reduces the cost by omitting the light, but a small led there would have been nice.

It also makes baguettes but we haven't tried that yet. I'll amend this when we do.

I saw where some people had quality issues with the unit. We haven't had any problems so far.

The loaf dimensions (length x width) stay the same for each size loaf, so the bigger loaves make taller bread. The smallest loaf (2lb) fits perfectly in our toaster, the larger loaves not so much. I guess when I bought this I thought the bigger sizes would make "more bread" but it doesn't really. For that reason we'll probably stick to the 2lb size, which is less calories / slice.

We really like the ease of use and the taste of the bread. It makes other things besides bread but we haven't tried them yet (jam, etc.). It has two spindles to mix the bread and that seems to make a lot of difference in how well it mixes the ingrediants.

First I had Sunbeam 5891 2-Pound Programmable Breadmaker, died after 2 weeks. Then, I had Panasonic SD-YD250 Automatic Bread Maker for years. The product was ok, but I was looking for a bread maker that makes a small baguette just like this one. I saw Emeril Lagasse on HSN demonstrating this bread maker and showing how to make baguette, it was so simple and easy. This breadmaker also has a viewing window, Panasonic SD-YD250 did not have one, that is a very nice addition and I love watching it. I am so happy with this new bread maker. It's the best bread maker I've ever own so far.
